Buying My First Home At 19
Yes, you read correctly! I purchased my first home at 19.
For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to own a property. Fast forward to now, and I have bought and sold three properties in the last four years!
Where did this idea of wanting to own property come from? This may seem funny, but it all stemmed from watching "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" and investigating how much properties cost in America. This then led to hours of scrolling through multi-million dollar listings on Zillow.com, and I discovered my obsession with becoming a real estate agent. As a young teenager, did I wish I could be selling the $50 million penthouse overlooking Central Park? Yes, I did... who wouldn't? But after completing a school-based traineeship in real estate, I was finally brought back to reality and the unglamorous side of this industry. However, I was not backing down from my aspiration.
I can remember that as soon as I got my first full-time role within the industry and received my first paycheck, I immediately checked how much I could borrow on my yearly wage, as well as how much I needed to save for my deposit to make this dream a reality. This then led to my first property purchase in Bayswater in June 2019. At the time, this property cost me $180,000, and the value of the complex has only increased by $80,000 to $100,000 since COVID, making it still very affordable.
It was not the flashiest property, but it got me into the property market and allowed me to learn and grow into the person I am today.
The most important lesson I learned from purchasing my very first home was that it did not need to be the fanciest property in Perth. All it needed was four walls and a roof. At the time of purchasing this home, I was earning a minimum wage of less than $30,000 per year, and it was the best investment I've ever made in setting myself up for my future.
